Washington, Jan 1 (ANI): Late former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto had distanced herself from a US-backed power-sharing deal with President Pervez Musharraf, a media report has said.

Benazir had written to a senior US State Department official that her Pakistan People's Party was not considering the deal as "a good-faith effort towards democracy", according to Washington Post journalist Robert D Novak, In the letter to the official, Benazir had written: In Pakistan the deal was being seen as a step to preserve embattled Musharraf who is seen as a US President George W Bush's man in Islamabad.

For many years now I've been running a very successful parent program, but I wanted to take it a step further. I wanted to reach out to parents worldwide and help them discover that there really is light at the end of the tunnel. That’s when I came up with Online Parent Support (OPS). Since its launch in 2004, OPS has overwhelmed users and success rates have been phenomenal. Click Here For More Info.

After reaching Karachi on October 18, Benazir requested the Bush Administration's assistance several times in giving her better protection. The US, however, said that she was worried over nothing and this compelled her to distance herself from the power-sharing arrangement, the daily said. Benazir was further disenchanted when Musharraf imposed emergency on November 3. The daily pointed out that she agreed, but got nothing in return. (ANI)

The story however had disappeared from ANI website. There was another story posted that says the Bush Administration warned Bhutto about possible threats and urged Musharraf to provide her with the same level of security provided to all former Prime Ministers.

“As a slain Bhutto was laid to rest, questions mounted about both the adequacies of the US efforts and shortcomings on the side of the Pakistani Government. US lawmakers and Bhutto's friends charged that Musharraf had rebuffed America's entreaties for beefed-up security. The US officials were reluctant to press Musharraf too hard, a former adviser to Bhutto said. The decision to provide intelligence to an opposition candidate in a country headed by a strong American ally reflects US recognition of the gravity of the threat that Bhutto faced. Yet though acknowledging the danger, US officials stopped short of providing direct security services, such as the private contractors they have arranged for Afghan President Hamid Karzai and for top leaders in Iraq.” Read More

U.S. Senator Joseph R. Biden was quoted as saying Musharraf was “indirectly complicit” in the Bhutto assassination.
